McCallister condemns cowardly Annalong attack

Ulster Unionist MLA John McCallister has condemned the people responsible for slashing a man across the face in Annalong on Saturday night.

The South Down MLA- who is also his Party’s Assembly Group Deputy Leader, said;

“Local people will be shocked and angered at this cowardly attack. Annalong is a quiet town where this type of incident is thankfully unknown. My thoughts are with the victim and I sincerely hope he makes a full recovery from this terrible ordeal.

I understand that the gentleman who was attacked was walking with the aid of a stick. The individuals who attacked him would have therefore been aware that he was not capable of defending himself. For two or three men to attack a man with a walking stick and to slash him across the face with a knife is absolutely disgraceful and is cowardice of the highest kind.

It is vital that the people responsible are caught and punished by the courts. No-one should think for a second about shielding them. If would appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Ulster Avenue area of Annalong on Saturday night, to please come forward immediately and pass that information to the Police. It is essential that these people are caught before they can attack another innocent person.”
