Planning approval for 13 hectare site in Larne is a welcome boost for the local economy – McKinty

Ulster Unionist Councillor for Larne Lough, Mark McKinty, has welcomed outline planning approval being granted for the redevelopment of Howden's Quay in Larne as 'a welcome boost for the local economy'. The comments came following Environment Minister Mark H Durkan's decision to give the project the green light.

Mr McKinty  said:

“The Howden's Quay area has been derelict for some time at one of the main entrances to Larne Town, despite its development potential. Larne residents and visitors noted the positive impact of minor improvements prior to the Giro d'Italia. This latest announcement is a welcome boost for the local economy.

“This site will incorporate residential, industrial and leisure facilities. It is perfectly located close to the Town Centre, near the Port of Larne, and is well connected to Belfast via the ongoing A8 and A2 dualling works.

“As a local councillor, I fully support this type of mixed development, especially within a regeneration context; the business element provides jobs to the local economy, all of which is boosted by increased footfall and a larger target audience from the new residents, and the leisure facilities provide an increased quality of life for all ages.

“I also continue to support a similar regeneration project at Magheramorne Quarry which, I believe, would be complimentary to the project behind today's announcement. I repeat what I have said many times before: Larne is an attractive place in which to live, work, visit and socialise for all - let's promote it far and wide.”
