Dignity of innocent victims should be recognised - Elliott

Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has highlighted the huge difference of character shown in the Fermanagh village of Derrylin yesterday.

Mr Elliott said:

“Yesterday morning I was pleased to have the opportunity to spend time with innocent victims’ families and the local community at their Church of Ireland service in Derrylin village.

“This service was conducted by Canon Walter Quill, former Minister in Castlederg and Killeter, who as rector in that area officiated at the burial of a number of innocent victims who were murdered by the IRA.

“This was a very dignified occasion, with a number of those attending who were relatives of people murdered in the Derrylin area by the IRA and others who were these victims’ neighbours and friends.

“Compare this with the event in the village in the afternoon when criminals and terrorists were glorified – it bears no similarity.

"There were no public protests by the innocent victims in this area, just heartache.

“It is unfortunate that Sinn Fein wouldn’t recognise the hurt that this event caused the innocent victims families in the area – I suppose I shouldn’t expect anything better.”
