Utter disgrace that funding for Victims’ Group has been cut – Nesbitt

Ulster Unionist Party Leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA, has stated that it is an utter disgrace that a support group for former members of the security forces faces closure because funding for some Victims` Groups has been ended due to the failure at the heart of devolved government to agree a functional budget.

Mr Nesbitt said:

“I am told the Ards Phoenix Group, which supports 600 former soldiers, policemen, prison officers and their families, now faces closure because of the lack of funds from OFMdFM. It is a disgrace that OFMdFM would even contemplate abandoning those who placed themselves in harm`s way to defend their families and communities from a relentless terrorist campaign designed to destroy this country.

“I was with the Ards Phoenix Group yesterday and it is clear there is huge value in the counselling and support services provided to veterans of Operation Banner.

“It is clear that their needs will continue, not least in the area of mental health and wellbeing. They don`t stop just because OFMdFM have decided to cut financial support.

“It will simply mean that many members of Ards Phoenix will turn to the Health Service which will put greater strain on an already stretched system.

“Why should these people suffer because of the failure at the heart of our government to agree a functional budget for the years ahead? OFMdFM have now decided to target former servicemen and women for cuts to their support. It is despicable.

“I am writing to OFMdFM urging them to find the money to keep Ards Phoenix Group open.”
