Statement from Danny Kennedy on Ulsterbus incident

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has said that an investigation is being carried out after an Ulsterbus carrying school pupils was involved in an incident near Omagh this morning.

Mr Kennedy said: “I understand and am relieved to hear that there are no reports of serious injuries. This was obviously an upsetting ordeal for all the schoolchildren, passengers and others who were involved and Translink will now be carrying out a full investigation into this matter. They will also assist the PSNI with their investigation.

“I also want to pass on my thanks to the emergency services and Translink staff who arrived at the scene very quickly to help all of those who were involved and deal with injuries."

West Tyrone MLA, Ross Hussey added:

“It is shocking to see the pictures of the car and the bus carrying school children lying on their sides, off the road and in a field.  I am just relieved that no one was killed or more seriously injured in what must have been a terribly traumatic event for all those involved, particularly the schoolchildren.

“This is a busy road used by many school buses coming into Omagh from the outlying rural hinterland.  The cause of the accident is a matter of speculation at this stage and we should wait for the investigation to be concluded.  I would add my sincere thanks to the emergency services for their work on the scene, and also to those passing motorists who stopped and gave their immediate help and assistance to those injured.  I wish all those hurt a full and speedy recovery.”
