Interface residents concerned for their own safety – Cllr Sonia Copeland

Councillor Sonia Copeland has said that no one should be made to feel unsafe in their own homes following a number of interface disturbances in East Belfast.

Councillor Copeland said:

“Following a number of recent interface disturbances I know that residents in Thistle Court are concerned about their safety. This is something that is totally unacceptable. No one should be made to feel unsafe in their own home.’

“This week the PSNI seized a number of bottles following a search of waste ground in the Thistle Court/Bryson Street/Madrid Street area as they had the potential to be used as missiles. They also carried out a search of a property in the Bryson Street area last weekend which resulted in items being seized that could be linked to interface incidents.

“There are currently a number of issues that are concerning residents in the area – not least the security of a gate which forms part of the peace wall. The Department of Justice have been made aware of this and I will continue to press the matter with them. I will be working with the PSNI in the coming days and weeks to make sure that these issues are resolved to the residents’ satisfaction.’
