Political talks need to focus on breaking logjam on Welfare Reform - Nesbitt

Ahead of today's meeting with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Ulster Unionist Leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA, has called for the fresh round of political talks to start with a focus on breaking the logjam on Welfare Reform.

 Mr Nesbitt said:

"It is clear Sinn Fein and the SDLP believe Nelson McCausland negotiated a bad deal with London. For those of us who were not at the the negotiating table, that is a matter of speculation.

"There is a very simple solution to the question of whether there is more money to be had. Let's start these talks with a roundtable, with senior representatives of both the Conservative and Labour Parties present, to tell us, eyeball to eyeball, what is possible today and what will happen after next May's General Election, whoever wins.

"We need to hear directly from the likes of George Osborne and Lord Freud, Ed Balls and Rachel Reeves, the respective spokespeople for the Treasury and Department of Work and Pensions.

"The only certainty we have at the moment is that we are about to squander tens of millions of pounds that should be going to the most vulnerable people of our society.

"We need to replace that with another certainty - the certainty of the attitude of the present and future governments to Welfare Reform in this part of the United Kingdom."
