Kennedy announces plan to install Audio Visual information on Metro buses

Transport Minister, Danny Kennedy, today announced plans for the implementation of audio visual information systems on the Metro bus network in Belfast.

The installation programme is due to be phased in from early 2015. It will involve all Metro buses being fitted with audio visual systems which will include on board audio announcements and visual displays advising the passenger of their next stop.

The systems will also be introduced at key bus stops on the Metro network advising passengers via an audio announcement of the arrival of the next bus.

Mr Kennedy said: “I am pleased to confirm that plans are being drawn up by my Department for the start of the installation of audio visual systems on the Metro Bus Network in Belfast. It is particularly pleasing to be able to make this announcement to coincide with Guide Dogs Week, which has this proposal as its core theme.

“The new systems will include audio announcements and visual displays both on board Metro buses and at key bus stops. This will not only lead to an improved passenger experience for people with visual impairments but it will also have a range of benefits for other users such as the increasing number of tourists that are using our public transport system”.

The roll out of the installation programme follows a successful pilot project of audio visual systems on the Castlereagh Road Metro route in 2011.
