Changes in European Tobacco Directive hastened Gallaher’s difficulties - Nicholson

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has described the loss of over 800 jobs at the Gallaher factory in Ballymena as ‘devastating’.

Jim Nicholson said;

“I and others in Strasbourg worked hard to lessen the problems for the company with the EU Tobacco Products Directive.

"Sinn Fein's Martina Anderson, by contrast, supported the legislation which has now been a major factor in the loss of more than 800 jobs in Co Antrim. Clearly this is another case of republicans not being realistic when it comes to standing up for the Northern Ireland economy and much-needed jobs in the Province.

"When the European legislation was first mooted, I predicted negative consequences for companies like Gallaher’s, placing severe pressure on maintaining the jobs at Ballymena.

“My heart goes out to all those who, over the coming 18 months, face losing their jobs at the Gallaher plant. This is a devastating blow for Ballymena and the Northern Ireland economy and, along with my party colleagues, I will be doing my utmost to help them in their plight."
