Fermanagh footballers help Northern Ireland to historic win in Athens - Elliott

Ulster Unionist MLA for Fermanagh & South Tyrone, Tom Elliott, has expressed his pride that two footballers from Fermanagh helped Northern Ireland to a historic achievement in winning their first three matches in a major qualifying tournament for the first time ever, when they defeated Greece 2-0 in Athens last night.

Mr Elliott said:

“I want to pay tribute to the Northern Ireland manager, Michael O’Neill and the entire squad of players on their outstanding team performances, but I will pay special tribute to the two Fermanagh lads.

“Last night Kyle Lafferty scored his third goal in three matches in this European qualifying campaign and has been a major player in the team’s performances ably assisted by goalkeeper Roy Carroll. The people of Fermanagh are extremely proud that they learnt their football here in the Lakeland county.

“Other notable contributions have come from Niall McGinn who learnt his football in Dungannon and Cookstown’s Aaron Hughes.

“I trust that the momentum and belief can be maintained for the rest of the campaign and that the entire Province can celebrate Northern Ireland qualifying for the European Championship in France in 2016.”
