Nicholson - More action needed to find 43 missing students in Mexico

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has today co-signed a motion for resolution in the European Parliament in relation to the recent tragedy involving drug cartels which has seen 43 student teachers go missing in Mexico, with at least two confirmed dead. The motion gives support to the Mexican President, recognises the steps that he has already taken, and encourages him to pursue justice for all victims.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's debate on the matter Mr Nicholson - a delegate on the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee - said:

“The tragic events on 26 September in Iguala which saw 43 student teachers go missing, with at least two dead, have shocked observers of the current situation in Mexico. It is suspected that a drug cartel, which may have infiltrated local police, is behind this tragedy. The Mexican Government must continue to use all resources at its disposal in the fight against these illegal armed gangs.

"As a delegate on the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee, I have brought forward a European Parliament motion for resolution on this issue. It expresses regret at this tragedy, highlights the action already taken by the Mexican Government in response, calls for a full investigation and condemns the infiltration of these illegal armed groups into local law enforcement entities.

"Over the past number of years, organised crime has tightened its grip on large parts of Mexico. The Government must do all in its power to ensure that the legitimate authorities are in control of law and order, and that the streets are not controlled by criminal gangs."
