Nesbitt condemns death threat against Gregory Campbell

Ulster Unionist Leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA, has condemned the death threat against the DUP's Gregory Campbell.

Mr Nesbitt said:

"Whatever people think of Gregory Campbell, or his comments about the Irish Language, violence is not the way forward. I call on those responsible for this death threat to make clear it is withdrawn. I also support the police in their efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

“I also regret that Mr Campbell has chosen to repeat his insult to the Irish Language. I am still not clear what point he is trying to make, but the impact is crystal clear. It is highly damaging to community relations.

"His party leader thinks this is slap stick. In saying that, the list of things the DUP cannot do has just got longer, with comedy added to an inability to deliver good government.

"The issue of an Irish Language Act was dealt with by the Ulster Unionist Party in the 1998 Belfast Agreement. It was the DUP who let it back onto the agenda at St Andrews in 2006. That was a very poor bit of negotiating, another thing the DUP cannot do well.

"The more Gregory Campbell insults those who cherish the Irish Language as part of their culture, the harder it is going to be to achieve a shared future.

"The Ulster Unionist Party does not see the need for an Irish Language Act, but neither do we need politicians making gratuitous insults against any section of our community."
