Overend presses Executive on internet safety

Ulster Unionist Party Spokesperson for Children and Young People, Sandra Overend MLA, has questioned the deputy First Minister on the continued lack of progress on bringing forward an internet safety strategy, and repeated her call on the Executive to take action to protect children online.

 The Mid-Ulster MLA commented:

“Last week at the Assembly I again questioned the deputy First Minister on progressing an e-safety strategy for Northern Ireland.

“I’m sure that across Northern Ireland many of our children and young people will be hoping to receive a tablet, smartphone or other electronic device this Christmas.  Whilst technology can do so much to help and entertain us, the threats that lie online continue to be a worry for parents.

“A recent BBC Spotlight programme highlighted some of the dangers of the internet for children and young people right here in Northern Ireland. Research conducted by the National Children’s Bureau in Northern Ireland show that four out of five young people now go online every day, often for hours. It is vital that they have the protection they need.

“Following discussions of online safety at the North/South Ministerial Council, I was keen to ask the deputy First Minister had any lessons been learned from the Republic of Ireland government. I welcome the deputy First Minister’s acknowledgement that this is indeed a global issue, but it is an issue that needs local action now.

“The Safeguarding Board in Northern Ireland has been tasked with developing an internet safety strategy, but they cannot carry out this work without support and funding from the Executive. It is imperative that this is provided without delay.”
