McGimpsey welcomes Culture Arts & Leisure Minister’s agreement on importance of attaching priority to creative projects of major significance, such as film, the Lyric Theatre and the Ulster Orchestra

Ulster Unionist MLA Michael McGimpsey has welcomed comments by the Minister for Culture, Arts & Leisure in which she agreed with him that creative projects of major significance, such as film, the Lyric Theatre and the Ulster Orchestra should receive priority.

Mr McGimpsey said;

“At Stormont Questions I asked the Minister for Culture, Arts & Leisure whether she has any funding stream priorities for arts and creativity, given the new financial regime under which she will have to manage her Department.

“I also asked if she agreed that it is also important to attach priority to creative projects of major significance - film, the Lyric Theatre and the Ulster Orchestra.

“I welcome the Minister’s response in which she said, and I quote, “Absolutely.”’

 She continued; “Certainly, the arts, culture and the digital creative industries have helped to contribute to the economy and to regeneration. There have been opportunities from the very big to the very small. It is really important that we harness those opportunities, not only to sustain what we have but to try to get them additional money to ensure that they are economically viable for the future.’

Mr McGimpsey concluded;

“I am convinced that Northern Ireland plc benefits greatly from the arts and creative industries. It is a field in which we have a proven track record of delivering excellence whether that be film, theatre or music. The Minister has my full backing for any support she may give to the local film industry, the Lyric Theatre and the Ulster Orchestra.”
