Nesbitt demands First and deputy First Ministers explain why young people will not be included in proposed age discrimination legislation

Ulster Unionist Leader Mike Nesbitt MLA has called on the First and deputy First Ministers to explain why they are not including young people in age discrimination legislation for the provision of goods, services and facilities, following the statement which they have issued today regarding age discrimination and their Programme for Government commitment to legislate in this area.

Mr Nesbitt, who is Chair of the Assembly’s OFMdFM committee, said:

“Today’s statement on Age Discrimination reveals that children and young people will not be included and as the statement concedes, this will indeed come as a great disappointment to many.

“Both the First and deputy First Ministers now need to explain why they have decided not to include young people in legislation which will prohibit unjustifiable age-differentiated practices.

“This is a particular problem for Sinn Fein who had been very much in favour but have rolled over yet again. Indeed we have seen so many rollovers from them that many people would be forgiven for wondering if Sinn Fein is planning to set up and run its own lottery.”
