Dobson condemns song calling for release of murderers of Constable Stephen Carroll

Upper Bann Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson has condemned those behind the release of a song calling for the release of the murderers of Constable Stephen Carroll, who was murdered in Craigavon on 9 March 2009, saying it will re-traumatise victims.

Mrs Dobson said;

"The guilty verdicts handed down in 2012 and reaffirmed last year, should have brought a long and harrowing time for the Carroll family to an end. I am proud to know Kate Carroll and her family and know that the ripples of hurt following her beloved Steve's murder, continue.

“This release of this song will achieve absolutely nothing other than to cause yet more suffering and distress to Kate and her family and re-traumatise them. Indeed I know from speaking to Kate today that she only heard about this song on Wednesday evening through the media.

“Kate and her family have suffered more than enough already, having lost a husband and father, murdered simply because he was a police officer. The family have endured not one but two trials, the justice system took its course and two individuals were found guilty in March 2012 and the Appeal Court confirmed the verdict in May 2014.

“We must never forget that the real victim in this case was Constable Stephen Carroll. His human rights were removed in the most foul and cruel manner. My sympathies, thoughts and prayers remain with Kate and her family.”
