McCallister hails the successes of the Health sector over the last four years

Ulster Unionist Party Health spokesperson, John McCallister has welcomed the publication of the Draft Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland, in particular the section which details the achievements and projects that are underway in the Health sector.

The Ulster Unionist commented:

“I welcome the publication of the Draft Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland.  This Strategy sets out investment by seven key sectors.  I am pleased that many of the key achievements since 2008 listed in the Health section have been as a result of the work of my Party colleague, Michael McGimpsey during his time as Health Minister.’

“Compared to four years ago we now have an even greater health and social care provision across the country, including seven new complexes which house diagnostic and treatment facilities in a community environment.  This year has also seen the opening of the Beechall and Shankill Health and Care Centres which provide a full range of services to the local community on their doorstep.’

“The Regional Child and Family Adolescent Mental Health facility became fully operational in 2010 and offers a first class service to children and young people who are suffering from mental health problems.  Given that suicide rates in Northern Ireland have sharply risen by 64% over the last decade, it is vital that those who are most vulnerable are able to receive the help they need, when they need it.’

“The new Downe Hospital and Craigavon Area Hospital now have new facilities which offer a range of services in their facilities, particularly the new day procedure and maternity units at the Downe and the Trauma and Orthopaedics Unit at Craigavon.’

“These new facilities and services all go a long way to ensuring that the people of Northern Ireland are receiving the best health social care available.  The achievements listed in the draft strategy are even more impressive when you consider that Michael McGimpsey had his Health Budget cut three times in eighteen months during his time as Minister.’
