Allen condemns North Belfast attacks

Andy Allen, the Ulster Unionist Party`s North Belfast spokesperson, has condemned attacks on the houses of Polish people in the Mountcollyer Avenue area on Monday night.

Mr Allen said:

“I unreservedly condemn these attacks as I would condemn any attack on homes or property regardless of the motivation.

“I note that the Police are treating these attacks as a racially motivated hate crime. I am very clear that there is no justification for targeting the homes or property of foreign nationals or indeed anyone at all. It is totally unacceptable that anyone should be subject to an attack because of their race, religion or nationality.

“Anyone who knows anything about history knows that the Poles fought bravely on the side of the Allies in World War 2, and that Polish fighter pilots played a crucial role in the Battle of Britain. Indeed the Ulster Unionist Party is committed to seeing a memorial established in Northern Ireland to the memory of all those Poles who fought in defence of freedom.

“Those responsible for Monday night’s attacks really need to consider their actions, their impact on North Belfast and to desist from such activities immediately.”
