Nesbitt condemns North Belfast attacks

Ulster Unionist Party Leader Mike Nesbitt has condemned the recent spate of attacks on the homes of Polish people in North Belfast and called on OFMdFM to bring forward a Racial Equality Strategy as a matter of urgency.

Mr Nesbitt, who is the Chair of the Assembly’s OFMdFM committee, said:

“The Ulster Unionist Party has been consistent in its condemnation of all and any attacks on individuals, homes and property, regardless of the motivation.

“There is absolutely no justification whatsoever for targeting the homes or property of foreign nationals or anyone else. In 2015 we must all be clear that a modern western European society can have no truck with anyone who seeks to attack another person or group on the grounds of race, religion or nationality.

“I appeal to anyone who knows anything about these attacks to pass that information onto the Police immediately. And I also call on the First and deputy First Ministers to bring forward a Racial Equality Strategy as a matter of urgency.

“Leadership is required to leave those responsible for these attacks in no doubt that their views and actions are unacceptable and have no place in the Northern Ireland of the present and future.”
