Swann welcomes commitment from Finance Minister over amateur sports clubs

Ulster Unionist sports spokesperson, Robin Swann has welcomed the commitment by the Finance Minister to review the current rate relief afforded to amateur sports clubs in Northern Ireland.

The North Antrim MLA said:

“Currently the level of rate relief afforded to amateur sports clubs in Northern Ireland is not in line with that of their counterparts in England, Scotland Wales.  Local amateur clubs receive 80% rate relief, while GB clubs can receive up to 100% relief from rates.’

“I have today received a personal commitment from Finance Minister, Sammy Wilson that he will review the current amount without reducing it below the current rate.  This is great news for the many amateur sports clubs across Northern Ireland.’

“I have been lobbied by many clubs over the last number of months and recently met with the IFA, GAA and Ulster Rugby to hear their concerns about the current rate and the implications it has during these difficult economic times.’

“Getting this issue to the floor of the Assembly has been a victory for the Ulster Unionist Party.  Now that we have received this commitment, I and my Party will keep the pressure on the Minister to ensure that this review is carried out in a timely manner.’
