Nicholson welcomes European Court decision on detention of terror suspects

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has welcomed the European Court of Human Rights' decision to reject claims by republicans that UK anti-terror laws breached their human rights.

Mr Nicholson said:

"The real suffering in these cases is not felt by those who have been arrested as part of a police investigation, but by those who wake up to the news that a loved one has been murdered by terrorists. We must never forget that the human rights of Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar were taken from them in the most brutal way the night they were murdered at Massereene barracks in Antrim.

"I am glad that on this occasion the European Court of Human Rights has found that the right of innocent victims of terrorism and their families to see that justice can take its course, has a role to play in the criminal justice system. My thoughts remain, as ever, with the Quinsey and Azimkar families."
