McCallister calls for protection of community meals

Ulster Unionist Health spokesperson, John McCallister has called on the Health Minister to ensure community meals are protected.

The South Down MLA commented:

“Community meals are a vital service that many older people in Northern Ireland depend on.  Without this service many in our community would not be sure of a cooked meal each day and would fall victim to malnutrition.

Those most vulnerable would also be more likely to suffer from ill health, putting even more pressure on our health service.   The Community Meals service also has a postivie effect on the mental health of those who benefit, as it removes the worry of when and how they are going to eat each day.’

“I am concerned that as the Community Meals service is income-based, the forthcoming Welfare Reform Bill will have an impact on whether the recipients will be able to afford to continue paying for the service.’

“I would urge the Health Minister to do all he can to protect this service and ensure that those who benefit from it are kept in mind when any future decisions are made.’
