Jim Nicholson MEP calls on Twitter to clamp down on terrorist propaganda

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has joined with 40 other European politicians in a letter to Twitter seeking clarification on what the company is doing to stem online abuse by terrorists and other malign individuals.

He welcomed clarification from Twitter over action it is taking to curb terrorist propaganda and radicalisation of young people.

Mr Nicholson said:

"Across the Middle East and beyond, terror groups are murdering Christians and other minorities on a daily basis.  Just this week, 88 Christians were kidnapped in Libya by ISIS.

"The social media problem is two-fold.  Terrorists have been using online platforms to spread violent propaganda, which is said to have had the knock on effect of radicalising more young people and potentially creating more terrorists.  At a time when individuals from the UK are heading to Iraq and Syria to fight, this is extremely worrying.

"In March, Europol stated that more than 46,000 Twitter accounts were used by supporters of ISIS.  I welcome the fact that Twitter is working closely with the EU's 'Radicalisation Awareness Network'.”

The UUP MEP said he met with a senior RAN figure earlier this year to discuss the vital work that they do.

"But there is always more that can be done.  My colleagues and I are encouraging the Commission to prioritise strengthening the network and curbing radicalisation as part of its 2016 work programme.

"For the majority of people, social media is a source for good.  So we cannot allow it to be abused by terror groups.  We must always be willing to tackle the spread of violent propaganda.”
