Nicholson congratulates Minister Danny Kennedy on securing EU funding for rail upgrades

Ulster Unionist MEP, Jim Nicholson, has congratulated the Minister for Regional Development, Danny Kennedy, following the announcement of EU funding for rail projects in Northern Ireland.

A total of 24m Euros has been secured by the Minister and his Department for two railway upgrades. The Londonderry to Coleraine line will receive 14,373,993 euros and the Knockmore to Lurgan line 9,684,520 euros.

Mr Nicholson said:

“This money represents a significant investment in our rail infrastructure and is fantastic news for Northern Ireland.

“I want to congratulate the Minister, Danny Kennedy, on his continued success in drawing down EU funding.

“Competition for this money was stiff and it is an exceptional accomplishment that the Department for Regional Development has secured these funds.

“At a time when all Stormont departments are facing budget pressures, it is to be especially welcomed.

“Danny Kennedy continually demonstrates the benefits of engaging with Europe. He is making the case for Northern Ireland in Brussels; as a result, we are reaping the rewards.”
