Independent Review Panel have gone way beyond their remit – Swann

Robin Swann, Ulster Unionist Party Chief Whip in the Assembly, has expressed surprise at the latest recommendations from the Independent Financial Review Panel, which was set up to make determinations on MLAs salaries, allowances and pensions.

Mr Swann said:

“We will take time to examine the Independent Financial Review Panel`s proposals in their entirety, but at first glance they have gone way beyond their remit.

“To expect MLAs not to display party symbols or emblems in their offices shows the Review Panel`s lack of understanding of politics. Voters elect politicians in the full knowledge of their party political allegiances. It is naïve to think otherwise. What next? No logos or party names on ballot papers.

“That does not mean any Ulster Unionist MLA or elected representative works only for Ulster Unionists. Our commitment is to serve equally the needs of those who voted for us, those who voted for other parties, and those who did not vote at all.

“It`s time for a review of the body. There`s no problem with independent scrutiny, but this panel may have served its purpose. They appear to be looking for work between periodic salary reviews.”
