Ulster Unionists vow to continue the fight for victims of Libyan supplied weapons

The Ulster Unionist Party has vowed to continue the fight to gain justice for the victims of weapons supplied by the Libyan regime of Colonel Gadaffi.

Speaking at Westminster today, Ulster Unionist Peer Lord Empey said;

“I have been actively pursuing this issue for some time and I welcome the fact that the Westminster Northern Ireland Affairs Committee is to hold a public investigation in September.

“I have previously tabled Parliamentary Questions and met with Cabinet Office officials, including the Prime Minister’s National Security Adviser Sir Kim Darroch who was tasked with conducting a review of Government policy towards Libya and the question of compensation for victims.

“It should be a source of shame that both the French and the Americans successfully negotiated settlements with Libya, but the United Kingdom did not, despite the fact that so many of the victims of the weapons supplied by Gadaffi were UK citizens. They deserve justice and I will be working closely with my Ulster Unionist colleagues in the House of Commons, Tom Elliott and Danny Kinahan, to ensure that this cause is not forgotten.”

South Antrim MP Danny Kinahan said;

“As a newly appointed member of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, I look forward to playing my role in investigating the matter of compensation for UK victims of the weaponry supplied to IRA terrorists by the Gadaffi regime.

“I will be urging our Government to take up this cause and to actively pursue it so that some measure of justice is finally done.”
