Swann calls for action on skills shortage

Robin Swann, Ulster Unionist Chair of Stormont’s Employment and Learning Committee, has commented on the revelation that Craigavon based global pharmaceutical company Almac could be forced to hire staff from abroad because of a skill shortage in Northern Ireland.

The North Antrim MLA said:

"I am not surprised at the recent statement from Almac that they may be forced to recruit staff from outside Northern Ireland to fill vacancies. Unfortunately they are not the only employer in this position.

"This is only the tip of the iceberg and if the underfunding and disinvestment in Higher and Further Education continues, not only will we cease to be attractive to foreign direct investment, we will see current Northern Ireland based companies and employers relocate elsewhere.

"The Alliance Party Employment and Learning Minister has launched his 'Big Conversation' on how Higher Education and Further Education should be funded. Maybe he should have a 'Bigger Conversation' with employers to make sure we are meeting their current and future needs.”
