McGimpsey welcomes Milltown Road speed reduction

Ulster Unionist MLA for South Belfast Michael McGimpsey has welcomed the new road safety measures on the Milltown Road, South Belfast as a result of his lobbying the Roads Minister Danny Kennedy.

The measures include a reduction in speed from 50mph to 40mph along a large section of the road and the replacement of the pedestrian crossing with a pelican one.

The South Belfast MLA said:

“Local residents from Belvoir and Milltown Estates and I were deeply concerned for their safety and that of all those using the Milltown Road which is a fast moving main arterial route into Belfast. There have been a number of very serious road collisions in the area including a fatal one in recent years. Milltown residents are forced to cross the road to access all vital services including schools, doctors, shops etc.”

“Given these very serious concerns I held a meeting with local residents and the Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy last year. I am delighted that the Minister has listened to our concerns and introduced a reduction in the speed limit and a new pedestrian crossing. I hope these will go some way to help alleviate the concerns of local residents who were in constant fear of crossing the road on foot or in their vehicles.”

“The increased safety measures on the Milltown Road will undoubtedly improve the safety for all road users in the area. I will continue to work closely with local residents, Roads Service and the PSNI to ensure the road is adequately monitored to protect the lives of all its users.”
