Ulster Unionist welfare spokesperson, Michael Copeland has welcomed news that the Westminster Government have decided not to proceed with proposals to scrap the mobility element for those living in residential care in the upcoming reform of Disability Living Allowance.
The East Belfast MLA said;
“News that the proposals to remove the mobility element from those living in residential care, and later the personal independence payment, have been scrapped will be welcomed by the many people in Northern Ireland who depend on it.’
“The proposed reforms would have seen the mobility element of the former Allowance removed, meaning that a lot of genuine claimants would no longer receive a benefit which ensures they are able to retain their independence.’
“Although it is vital to reform our current welfare system to ensure it is as effective as possible, we must protect those who are most vulnerable in our society.’
