Kinahan calls for action on gender-neutral national HPV vaccination programme

Danny Kinahan MP has tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons calling for a gender-neutral national vaccination programme against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).  Infection with certain types of HPV can lead to the development of a range of cancers, genital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

Danny Kinahan MP said:

“I have tabled an Early Day Motion calling for adolescent boys to be included in the national HPV vaccination programme.  I think that the case for the programme to become gender-neutral is clear as it is the only certain way of protecting both genders against particular cancers, genital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

“Expanding the programme will promote that looking after your sexual health is something that is the responsibility of both sexes.  Currently gay men are also at greater risk while only females receive the vaccine, and including both males and females in the programme can move towards addressing the imbalance in those taking up the vaccine across socio-economic and ethnic groups across the United Kingdom.

“I believe it is something that will gather wide support in Parliament and across the United Kingdom.  Currently the timeframe for a decision on expanding the programme is set at 2017, I consider this to be too long and hope we can speed up the process.   I would appeal to the public to lobby their MPs to lend their support to my EDM and to raising awareness of the need to ensure that both sexes are being vaccinated against HPV.”
