Tom Elliott MP has said that Jeremy Corbyn is out of step with Labour on the constitutional position of Northern Ireland given the clear public statement from Vernon Coaker that the Party is still committed to the consent principle.
Tom Elliott MP said:
“When our Party met with the Shadow Secretary of State, Vernon Coaker, this week he was very clear that Labour is committed to the consent principle as set out in the Belfast Agreement. Indeed he has also been unambiguous in the House of Commons that this is the position. What we have here is a Party Leader who is out of step with his own Party’s position.
“We have requested a meeting with Jeremy Corbyn to discuss a range of issues. I will be attending the Labour Party Conference next week where I look forward to discussing this further with Party members.”
