Swann welcomes focus on post education special needs provision

Robin Swann MLA, the Ulster Unionist chair of Stormont’s Employment and Learning Committee, has welcomed publication of a cross Departmental Action Plan to assist young people with severe learning disabilities, who are making the transition from school into adult services.

Mr Swann said:

“I am glad to see that a cross Departmental Action Plan has now been published on what is an area of public policy which deserves the attention it is now getting.  The DEL Minister and his officials are clearly keeping a close eye on the current Inquiry being held by the Employment & Learning Committee.

“The Committee Inquiry is focussing on Post Special Educational Needs Provision in Education, Employment and Training for those with learning disabilities.

“My committee has highlighted many of the gaps in provision that this Action Plan seeks to close. Specifically, the transition from education to work is an area where recurring difficulties have been raised in many evidence sessions, especially amongst parents.

“I will ensure that this piece of work will be introduced into our Committee Report, but I also assure the Minister that he will be held to account for his words in this document.  Certainly, I won't allow this intervention by the Minister to deflect from any of the work or recommendations coming forward from the Inquiry.”
