The Fresh Start has lasted a week – what happens to the money now? - Danny Kinahan MP

Danny Kinahan MP has said that urgent clarity is required over what will happen to the £240million the NI Executive had earmarked for tax credit mitigation following the Governments u-turn on the proposed cut.

Danny Kinahan MP said:

“It is clear that the DUP rushed an agreement so that Peter Robinson could retire rather than wait a few days to see what the Chancellor would say about tax credits.

“The Fresh Start has lasted a week. What happens the £240million earmarked for tax credits mitigation now? What is it going to be used for now that it won`t be needed for tax credit mitigation or is it going to be a whole new negotiation?

“An aspect of the Autumn Statement that is welcome is the news that 2,000 extra flights to and from Northern Ireland will be supported by the Regional Air Connectivity Fund. Ulster Unionists are always keen to promote connectivity and in particular Lord Empey through his Private Members’ Bill in the House of Lords has been attempting to protect slots at Heathrow to and from the regions.

“Looking to my own constituency of South Antrim I of course hope that the Belfast International Airport can get its fair share of the extra flights that will be made available.”
