Elliott highlights impact of burglary on the elderly

Ulster Unionist Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP Tom Elliott has demanded tougher sentences for those convicted of burglary.

After speaking to a constituent who was left feeling very vulnerable after her Dungannon home was robbed, Mr Elliott said:

“It is a terrible shame that anyone, particularly older people, should have to live in fear, in what should be the safety of their own home.

“I have spoken to one lady from the Dungannon area who had items stolen during a burglary that were of significant sentimental value. This is a shameful situation that anyone should have their home violated and their possessions stolen in such a manner.

“I know that similar incidents have taken place in different parts of Northern Ireland, particularly Greater Belfast. The criminal gangs that appear to be able to operate with relative ease must be stopped and the courts must impose tough sentences which act as both a punishment and a deterrent to send out a message that these crimes are taken seriously and will not be tolerated.”
