Elliott welcomes High Court ruling on Bloody Sunday investigation

Ulster Unionist MP Tom Elliott has welcomed today’s High Court Judgement which ruled that ex-soldiers who face questioning over Bloody Sunday should not be arrested and brought to Northern Ireland for police interviews.

Mr Elliott said:

“The Ulster Unionist Party welcomes the Judgement of the High Court in London which means that those ex-soldiers who Police wish to speak to in connection with Bloody Sunday, can be questioned in Great Britain rather than Northern Ireland.

“We are quite clear that no-one is above the law and it is important to note that the ex-paratroopers stated in court that they have no issue with being interviewed or co-operating with the investigation, but they brought their challenge on the grounds of where they would be interviewed.

“Many people believe that having suffered the ignominy of having a British Prime Minister state that their actions on Bloody Sunday were unjustified and unjustifiable, that the Paras have suffered enough.

“Many people will also feel that it is punitive and disproportionate to pursue individual members of the Parachute Regiment in relation to events more than 40 years ago, given that we live in a time when there are literally hundreds of unsolved murders committed by terrorist groups.”
