Electoral Office facing major cuts which could affect public confidence in the electoral system - Empey

Ulster Unionist Peer Lord Empey has voiced concerns that the Electoral Office in Northern Ireland is facing major cuts, which he believes could affect public confidence in the electoral system.

Speaking after receiving answers to a number of questions posed by him at Westminster, Lord Empey said:

“The Parliamentary Answers I have recently received from the Government indicate to me that major cuts are on the way for the Electoral Office in Northern Ireland.

“Over the years, the Electoral Office has established a widespread reputation for professionalism and impartiality. Anything that would put this at risk is to be avoided at all costs.

“I believe that some local electoral offices face closure and a reduction in staffing is on the cards. This incoming year will usher in a period of uncertainty for staff at all levels in the organisation, and I understand the Trade Unions have already been consulted.

“The Ulster Unionist Party is concerned that Local Councils will be asked to conduct the counts of key elections. Given that the law governing Westminster, Assembly and local elections is different, and that different forms of voting are involved, a huge burden would be placed on local government officials. This is taking a great risk with public confidence in our electoral system.

“The closure of local electoral offices would have a negative effect on public access for electoral identity cards, postal and proxy votes and work against attempts to increase the number of voters on the register.

“When the consultation on these proposals begins, it is important that we work to protect the very foundation of confidence in our election system. We do not want to see Northern Ireland following in the footsteps of some cities in England where widespread electoral fraud in now endemic. We must protect the integrity of the process. This is best achieved by a dedicated impartial and professional staff under the control of the Chief Electoral Officer.”
