Nesbitt expresses sadness at death of Christy O’Connor Junior

Ulster Unionist Leader Mike Nesbitt has expressed his sadness at the death of golfing great Christy O’Connor Junior, whose passing was announced today.

Mr Nesbitt said:

“Christy O’Connor Junior was a great Irish and European professional who will forever be remembered for his performance at the Belfry in 1989 when he played a major role in helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup.

“He won four European Tour titles and was a popular figure on the Senior Tour. I was fortunate enough to meet him once at an event at Bangor Golf Club a few years ago. It was one of many charitable events designed to help the less fortunate, which enjoyed his support. I am pleased to say that he was an absolute gentleman who made time for everyone.

“He will be sadly missed by golf fans wherever the sport is played and my sympathies are with his family and friends.”
