Ulster Unionist Party selects Andy Allen and Chris McGimpsey as its East Belfast Assembly candidates

The Ulster Unionist Party has selected Andy Allen and Chris McGimpsey as its Assembly candidates for East Belfast.

Ulster Unionist leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA, said:

"The face of local politics is changing, be it at leadership level, or among the body of the 108 MLAs who will populate the next Northern Ireland Assembly.

"I am delighted with the combination we are offering the people of East Belfast. Andy Allen's record of service and sacrifice as a soldier in the Army is beyond question and since replacing Michael Copeland at Stormont, he has shown equal commitment and determination as a public representative.

"Chris McGimpsey has a lifetime's experience in politics, both as an elected member and as a campaigner capable of mobilising public opinion and challenging governments at the highest level. He remains passionate about delivering better outcomes from Stormont.”

Andy Allen MLA said:

“I am honoured to be selected as an Ulster Unionist Party candidate to stand in this year’s Northern Ireland Assembly election for East Belfast.

“As someone who was born and raised in East Belfast and who currently represents the people to the best of my ability, I am delighted to have the opportunity to put my name before the people of East Belfast for election.

“I look forward to the weeks and months ahead in continuing to get out on the doors, meeting and speaking to the people of the constituency.

“My pledge to the people of East Belfast, which reflects the commitment of my Party across Northern Ireland, is to continue to do what is right for each business, individual and family - working hard until the job is done is the most important aspect of politics.”

Dr Chris McGimpsey was educated at Cabin Hill and Campbell College.  After years away at University he returned to Northern Ireland and resided for almost 30 years in Ballyhackamore.  He has 16 years of elective experience and currently represents the people of Lisnasharragh on Belfast City Council.

Councillor Chris McGimpsey said:

“These are challenging times for the people of East Belfast.  I am glad that I shall be on hand to represent East Belfast.

We have seen the failures of Sinn Fein and the DUP over the last number of years.  Northern Ireland can be a better place for all.

“We need effective government from a party with a track record of delivering.  That party is the Ulster Unionist Party and I want to deliver for the electors of East Belfast."
