UK regional air connectivity must be protected – Elliott

Ulster Unionist MP Tom Elliott has urged the UK Government to do all it can to ensure that UK regional airports are given the encouragement and support they need to help develop their surrounding local economies.

Speaking at today’s Westminster Hall debate on regional airports and UK airports capacity, Mr Elliott said:

“Whatever some airports might think, the UK has one national hub airport. For Northern Ireland, the link between Belfast and Heathrow is, for us, a major piece of national infrastructure – unlike colleagues in Great Britain, we have no real alternative, especially from a business point of view, for international connectivity.

“Currently, Her Majesty’s Government has no ability to guarantee slots at Heathrow for any UK region because this is an EU competence. This is why Lord Empey has brought forward his Airports Amendment Bill to correct this fundamental weakness.

“In 1991, 18 domestic destinations were served by Heathrow. Today, the number of regional airports with Heathrow access is down to only 7. This trend is expected to continue as slots for long haul flights may be a more profitable option for airlines. The Airports Commission forecasts that by 2030 the number may be as low as 3 domestic airports served by Heathrow.

“If the Government is serious in its commitment to see all regions of the United Kingdom prosper and experience strong economic growth they must assist our airports in every way possible to channel business and trade throughout the four corners.”
