EU debate needs facts not fiction – Kinahan

South Antrim Ulster Unionist MP Danny Kinahan has called for a greater factual basis to the debate on the UK's EU membership.

Speaking after today’s meeting of the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee, Mr. Kinahan said:

“It is quite clear there is a tremendous dearth of facts in this debate. In today's meeting the Committee heard from three Federation of Small Business representatives who time and again returned to the issue that small business owners in Northern Ireland have not been informed of the facts concerning our EU membership or the consequences of leaving.

“I have spoken to a number of private, public and third-sector organisations and this problem is routinely raised. The public have an appetite for clear information, not rhetoric.

“The question of our EU membership is undoubtedly one of the most important constitutional issues faced by the UK within living memory. We must not make a decision based on soundbites or allow our perception of the issues to be warped. We must take our position based on facts.”
