Executive’s lacklustre response to Brexit could put NI on the fringes of negotiations - Aiken

Steve Aiken OBE MLA has said that the Executive’s failure to come up with a post-Brexit plan of any substance could put Northern Ireland on the fringes of the UK’s negotiations.

The Ulster Unionist Economy spokesperson said:

“The lacklustre response from the Executive to Brexit continues.  The most substance we have got from the First Ministers so far was when they sent a letter to the Prime Minister on August 10 that didn’t do anything other than state the obvious.

“During Executive Office Question Time today, First Minister Foster revealed that the Prime Minister has not yet responded.   On Sunday, Theresa May was outlining her plans to trigger Article 50 by March 2017, yet the Executive can’t even get a response to their very basic initial observations.

“Does this signal that Number 10 have put the DUP and Sinn Fein on the long finger?  The Executive’s failure to come up with a plan of any substance could put Northern Ireland on the fringes of the negotiations.

“Perhaps when they are finished quaffing Champagne at the Conservative Party conference the DUP will set aside some time to outline Northern Ireland specific priorities to those who will be carrying out the negotiations on behalf of the United Kingdom.”
