We need a Brexit deal that works for all of the United Kingdom - Nicholson

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has called on the Prime Minister to take on board the needs of all parts of the United Kingdom as the Government sets out its priorities for leaving the European Union.

Speaking ahead of a business breakfast in Fivemiletown on the economic implications of Brexit, Mr Nicholson called for a Brexit that works for all parts of the United Kingdom.

The Ulster Unionist breakfast discussion - hosted by Tom Elliott MP - on the economic implications of Brexit, is an opportunity for local businesses to engage with those at the very heart of Government, and Minister Robin Walker, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, will be in attendance.

Jim Nicholson MEP said:

“Mrs May’s message at the Conservative Party Conference was ‘a country that works for everyone.’ I agree, but I also think that means we need a Brexit that works for everyone, and every part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

“We also need to make sure our strategic sectors - for instance agri-food and manufacturing -  are safeguarded from any pitfalls and are also able to take advantage of any opportunities that Brexit may bring.

“Many circles still need to be squared. For instance, if we leave the Customs Union, this will have serious border implications. Will there have to be a hard border somewhere, either on the island of Ireland or more worryingly at the ports and airports of Great Britain? I understand that there are divisions on this key issue at the very heart of Mrs May’s Cabinet.

“Be under no illusions: we are only in the infancy of what will be a long and tough negotiation, and it will be some time until we have a final deal. If we don’t get this right, Northern Ireland will have the most to lose.

“If we are going to make a success of Brexit, it needs to work for everyone.”
