Nicholson welcomes MEPs’ vote for greater support for innocent victims

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has welcomed the approval by the European Parliament of the creation of a new budget line to provide funding for innocent victims of terrorism.

The European Parliament voted on the EU’s budget for 2017 in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

Mr Nicholson said:

“This is a very welcome development, but it is still very much early days. There is now a mandate from the European Parliament to pursue this funding in the upcoming budget negotiations with the Member States and the European Commission. We will continue to monitor this situation closely.

“The Parliament also resolved, by a huge majority, that the needs of innocent victims of terrorism are all too often forgotten or considered secondary when measures to tackle the terrorist threat are proposed.

“This initiative was introduced by my colleagues in the ECR Group of the European Parliament, and we welcome that a large majority of MEPs were able to support this amendment.”
