Kinahan welcomes internet Counter-terrorism measures

Ulster Unionist MP, Danny Kinahan, has welcomed news that the UK’s Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) has referred for removal 220,000 pieces of terrorist related content, since it was established in February 2010.

Mr Kinahan received the information as a response to a written parliamentary question to the Home Office.

The South Antrim MP said:

“I commend the work of the police Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) who have identified and referred 220,000 pieces of terrorist related content to internet providers for removal, in the last seven years.

“I am however concerned at the extent of content involved.

“It is vital that the internet does not become a space where terrorist groups are given the opportunity to preach hate, groom and recruit individuals to support their violent causes.

“We have seen with the growth of Daesh, how the internet and social media has been used to lure recruits to join their murderous death cult.

“We must continue to be vigilant and support the efforts of CTIRU, and our intelligence services, so we can defeat those groups who wish to destroy our way of life.”
