Brexit Minister told people of NI must not be second class UK citizens

  • Jim Nicholson MEP tells Brexit Minister David Davis MP that border arrangements must not make NI population second class UK citizens
  • Brexit must work for all citizens of the UK

Speaking with David Davis, Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, in Strasbourg on Tuesday morning, Jim Nicholson MEP warned against making the people of Northern Ireland “second class citizens in their own country”.

Mr Nicholson said:

“It appears we are still some way off Article 50 being triggered, beginning the UK’s formal negotiations exiting the European Union.

“While it is not yet clear exactly what the UK Government wants from these negotiations, I emphasised that the majority of people in Northern Ireland will not accept an internal UK border at the ports and airports of Great Britain. We do not want to be second class citizens in our own country.

“I was happy to speak with David Davis this morning, and was glad of the opportunity to repeat my call for a Brexit that works for all the people of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.”
