Crisis at Maghaberry requires immediate action - Kinahan

  • Three deaths at HMP Maghaberry in the past month
  • Executive must act to resolve crisis
  • UK Justice Minister to look at the matter closely

Ulster Unionist MP, Danny Kinahan has called on the UK Government to use its influence to resolve the current crisis in the Northern Ireland prison system.

Mr Kinahan was speaking earlier in the Commons during questions to the Secretary of State for Justice.

The South Antrim MP said:

“The current crisis in the Northern Ireland prison system, which has tragically led to deaths of three prisoners at HMP Maghaberry in the past month, deserves the immediate attention of the local Justice Minister and the Northern Ireland Executive.

“Today in the Commons, I highlighted the issue to the Secretary of State for Justice and her team.

“I was encouraged by the response of the Under-Secretary of State for Justice, Sam Gyimah who said he would look closely at the matter.

“It is vital that our prisons are safe for Prison Officers and prisoners alike, and I hope the UK Government will put pressure on the Executive to act.”
