There can be no hiding place in the Renewable Heat Incentive scandal

·         One of the biggest scandals in Stormont’s history

·         Overspend of nearly half a billion pounds

·         There must be accountability

Ulster Unionist MP, Danny Kinahan has said we must get to the truth of the Renewable Heat Incentive scandal.

Mr Kinahan was questioning the Economy Minister Simon Hamilton who was giving evidence at the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee at Westminster. The Committee are currently holding an inquiry into the energy sector in Northern Ireland.

The South Antrim MP said:

“Clearly the Renewable Heat Incentive represents one of the biggest scandals in the history of the devolved institutions, with an overspend of nearly half a billion pounds.

“The revelations in last night’s BBC Spotlight programme raise serious questions about the ability of the Executive to effectively manage energy policy.

“It is clear that issues which were flagged by whistleblowers were not acted on appropriately.

“Today in Committee, Simon Hamilton was extremely reluctant to give answers on this topic, and was unable to offer any clarity.

“We must now get to the bottom of what went wrong, and identify who is responsible, whether they are officials, special advisers, or indeed Ministers.

“All those involved in the Renewable Heat Incentive scandal must be forthcoming and engage fully with the unprecedented Public Accounts Committee inquiry.

“There can be no hiding place for anyone and there must be accountability.”
