Downey and Hutchings cases could not contrast more starkly

  • No-one is above the law
  • Terrorists must face justice

Ulster Unionist MP, Danny Kinahan has said that the Downey and Hutchings cases could not contrast more starkly.

Mr Kinahan was speaking today in a debate in Westminster Hall on legacy issues.

The South Antrim MP said:

“Today it was very clear, that the current situation is unacceptable.

“We have the case of Corporal Major Hutchings, who is faced with another investigation despite it being found in 1974 and 2012 that he has no case to answer.

“Contrast this with John Downey, on trial for the murder of four soldiers in the 1982 Hyde Park bombing, after it was discovered he was part of the OTR scheme, receiving one of 187 comfort letters sent to on the run terrorists, his case was thrown out of court.

“Let’s be very clear, no-one should be above the law, whether they are security force personnel or paramilitary.

“The approach to the past must be balanced, fair, impartial and proportionate and the terror gangs who murdered thousands of our people should face justice.”
