Beattie welcomes PSNI investigation into Kieran Conway’s IRA claims

Doug Beattie MC MLA the Ulster Unionist Party’s Justice spokesperson has welcomed the news that the PSNI Legacy Investigations Branch (LIB) are investigating Kieran Conway over comments he made in a BBC TV interview.

Doug Beattie MC said:

“Last month I wrote to the Chief Constable about comments made by Dublin solicitor Kieran Conway on the BBC Hardtalk programme. During the interview Mr Conway outlined criminal activity including participating in the murder of British soldiers while he was a Provisional IRA ‘volunteer’ in the mid-seventies.

“The PSNI have now confirmed to me that the Legacy Investigation Branch (LIB) is examining the interview on 27th October and the subsequent Nolan interview a few days later, plus the book written by Mr Conway. This investigation will also look at his general involvement in terrorist activities and his membership of the Provisional IRA. This includes investigating material which might corroborate specific involvement by Mr Conway in criminal acts.

“I am however slightly confused as to some of the language used in the response, where the Police seem unclear if the offences of murder, assisting murder or attempted murder were committed in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, given that British soldiers only operated in this jurisdiction. However, they have stated they will, where appropriate and reasonable, collaborate with other law enforcement agencies.

“Mr Conway’s boastful comments about the murder of British soldiers are sickening and I will be asking the PSNI for a progress report on this case when appropriate.”
