Dobson represents Northern Ireland at Commonwealth Conference

The annual Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference took place in London last week with delegates from branches from across the world in attendance.

Upper Bann Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson represented Northern Ireland in her role as Chair of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) at Stormont.

Jo-Anne Dobson MLA said:

"Strengthening ties with our partners across the Commonwealth is essential for Northern Ireland's future both economically and socially.

"This is especially true in a post-Brexit era where strengthening the already strong bonds which exist between ourselves and countries across the world takes on an even greater importance.

“I was delighted by the enthusiasm and warmth of delegates attending towards Northern Ireland both culturally and as a trading partner.  The sheer breadth of the links between ourselves and countries on the other side of the world never ceases to amaze me.

"The annual CPA conference is an event which draws delegates from countries across the world including Canada, India, Malaysia, South Africa, Jamaica  as well as closer to home. It was a unique opportunity for senior representatives to come to our nation at a time when strengthening economic ties for our local and national economy is so hugely important.

"I was honoured to be able to fly the flag for Northern Ireland and to work with so many people who are committed to economic prosperity and increased trade potential.

"The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is a hugely important vehicle to drive forward improvements in our relations with our friends in countries across the world. I am proud to play a role in that process on behalf of my constituents."
